Emily Bockian Landsburg, CEO, Board, Co-founder

Emily Bockian LandsburgAn expert in market-driven implementation of environmentally sustainable technologies, Landsburg previously built southeastern Pennsylvania’s largest biodiesel distribution business. Here she assisted municipalities and utilities such as the City of Philadelphia and Exelon switch to biodiesel in a seamless and cost-effective manner. Previously, Landsburg successfully started and sold a business addressing sewage disposal in the marine industry. A nationally recognized leader, she serves as the Co-Chair of Water Environment Federation’s Biofuels Task Force, Chair of the National Biodiesel Board’s Sustainability Task Force, and was named one of Philadelphia’s Emerging 101 Connectors by Leadership Philadelphia. Landsburg graduated magna cum laude in applied math from Columbia University and is an Environmental Leadership Program Fellow.

Nate Turner, COO

Nate TurnerA versatile business strategist and engineer with international experience in the energy, water and construction industries, Turner leads BlackGold’s day to day business operations. Turner spent his early career redesigning and constructing wastewater treatment facilities for large-scale municipal projects. Later he helped energy SuperMajors and manufacturing companies streamline operations, evaluate market conditions, and devise capital investment strategies as a business management consultant at a Fortune 500 company. Along with Landsburg, Turner co-chairs the Biofuels Task Force for the Water Environment Federation (WEF). He also serves on the Greater Philadelphia Green Economy Task Force Policy Committee and as a board member of the Resource Exchange, a non-profit organization that reclaims and repurposes construction materials for use in the arts. Turner holds a BS in Environmental Engineering from Northwestern University.

In 2008 Fernands was selected as one of the Philadelphia Business Journal’s “40 Individuals Under 40” and in 2007 he was inducted into the Wharton School of Business’ Entrepreneurs Hall of Fame.

Peter Shaw, Board Secretary

Peter ShawFounder and Managing Partner at The Intelligent Project, a private equity-backed Smart-Grid consulting firm. Previously, Shaw was Director at Navigant Consulting, Inc. (NYSE: NCI), an international strategy and management consultancy specializing in industries undergoing substantial regulatory or structural change. He has 20 yrs of experience advising companies on integrated resource planning, new product development and customer strategy.

Charles Howland, Board

Charles Howland

Charlie Howland is an attorney with over 25 years of practice in environmental law.  He presently is a Senior Assistant Regional Counsel with the U.S Environmental Protection Agency.  In 2008 and 2009 he served as general counsel for a renewable energy development company, helping to advance their utility scale solar and wind projects in the U.S. and Canada.  He has taught environmental law courses in graduate programs at several universities, and has published and lectured on environmental law issues at industry forums, bar associations, and law schools in the U.S. and abroad.   He is a member of the American Bar Association’s Section of Energy, Environment and Resources Renewable, Alternative and Distributed Energy Resources Committee, as well the Lower Merion Township Planning Commission.  (Information regarding EPA is for biographical information only and does not imply endorsement by EPA.)

Bob Bradley, Board

President of Atlantic Coast Energy, an independent petroleum distributor that selling millions of gallons of petroleum and biodiesel products annually. Bradley has over 35 years of experience in the petroleum industry including sales, terminal management, energy trading, and financial risk management.

Dave, VP Project Development

Dave brings over 25-years of experience in industrial water management planning, water out-sourcing and heavy industrial Greenfield project development support to BlackGold. Dave’s breadth of project experience includes hundreds of projects in over 16 countries, process wastewater treatment and reuse, zero-liquid-discharge, and high-purity water production for Fossil and Nuclear Power, Pulp & Paper, Petroleum Production & Refining, Chemical Processing, Iron & Steel, Mining & Mineral Processing, General Manufacturing. Dave comes to BlackGold from GE Water & Process Technologies, has held business development roles with energy services companies Wood Group and North American Energy Services, and served as the Budget Subcommittee Chairman, King County/Metro Citizens Water Quality Advisory Committee, advisory committee to the King County Council on issues relating to water quality and the operation of the municipal wastewater treatment facilities of the Greater Seattle area.

Jeff, Director of Field Services

A versatile and seasoned professional with experience in the facility design, construction and commissioning, Pace leads BlackGold’s Field Services group. Pace spent his early career in process development, control systems and plant commissioning. Later he helped design, commission and run the world’s first super critical biodiesel facility, prior to joining BlackGold.

Brian, Director of R&D

Brian plays a key role in BlackGold’s process design and development. He is a holder of 7 patents, including BlackGold’s FOG-to-Fuel® patent. Brian has a MS in Chemical Engineering, is a licensed engineer in PA, and has extensive experience in process design, project engineering and process control.

Steve, Senior Engineer

Steve joined BlackGold in 2005 and has been responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Philadelphia R&D facility, including process development, plant construction, and fuel production and quality assurance. Steve also spearheaded the San Francisco installation for the first FOG-to-Fuel® system. Steve holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from Drexel University.

Mike, Project Development

Mike has consulted in the energy sector as an energy technology analyst, where he identified and performed due diligence on renewable energy companies and innovative business strategy. During his early career as a chemical engineer, he managed international projects in the polymer industry. This included optimization of process efficiency and operating costs as well as implementation of new technologies for capacity expansion. Mike holds a Masters in Innovation Management & Entrepreneurship from Brown University, and Bachelors in Chemical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts.

Elvis, Technical Engineer

Elvis is BlackGold’s engineer responsible for design and implementation of BlackGold systems and equipment. He specializes in field retrofit and fabrication. Elvis joined BlackGold in 2010 and was instrumental in the commissioning of BlackGold’s first FOG-to-Fuel® installation in San Francisco. Elvis holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Drexel University.

Ria, Engineering Analyst

As a member of the Company’s technical team, Ria is closely involved in the design, development and execution of projects at BlackGold. She supports business, sales and engineering initiatives through research, technical analysis, modeling and market research. Ria earned a MS in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from the VIT University in India.

John, Field Engineer

A field engineer working at BlackGold’s San Francisco location, John installs, maintains, and repairs equipment, in addition to running process operations. His previous work in the construction and aerospace/defense industry has led him to develop him strong attention to detail and mechanical aptitude, as well as experience in hands-on troubleshooting in a wide range of environments. Some of his most recent work includes first-, second-, and third-generation biofuels R&D in both academia and industry, with an emphasis on molecular cell biology together with genetic and metabolic engineering. John holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Kirklan, Field Engineer

A field engineer working at BlackGold’s San Francisco location, Kirklan installs, maintains, and repairs equipment, in addition to running process operations. Prior to joining BlackGold Kirklan was an Electronic Technician and Navigational Specialist in the US Navy. Kirklan is working toward his degree in the Process Technician Program at Los Medanos College.

Pete, Engineer

Electrical engineer, specializing in control systems and automation, Pete is responsible for designing, fabricating and installing custom control systems for industrial and experimental applications. Pete holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University and gained experience, developing automation and control systems for experimental facilities at The Pennsylvania Muscle Institute, a biophysics laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania.

Brittany, Associate Controller & Human Resources

Brittany is responsible for the day-to-day business operations at BlackGold’s corporate headquarters in Philadelphia. She plays an integral role in both the financial and personnel aspects of the Company and supports the project development team when entering new markets. Brittany holds a BS in Business Administration from Drexel University.

Ricky, Facility Administrator

Ricky assists with the day-to-day business operations of BlackGold’s facilities. She also works with the Project Development team. Ricky has a diverse and broad background—as a dog obedience instructor, she expanded her dog training business to include a doggie day care and grooming shop. Before this Ricky served as a paramedic in California. Ricky holds a BS in Business Management/ Emergency Medical Services from the University of California at Berkley and she also has an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from the Community College of the Air Force. In the warmer weather, you may see Ricky riding her Harley-Davidson Road King.

Rob, Analyst

Rob is an Analyst on the project development team. He has previously worked in the energy industry developing a pilot residential energy efficiency program. He is currently pursuing a Master of Environmental Studies focusing on Environmental Management and Sustainability at the University of Pennsylvania. He also holds a BA from Wake Forest University.

Dr. Michael J. Haas, Research Collaborator

Dr. Michael J. HaasA research biochemist with the US Department of Agriculture, Dr. Haas is an internationally recognized leader in developing methods for the production of biodiesel from low-cost lipid feedstocks with over 20 years of experience in lipid chemistry and biochemistry. He has published over 65 research articles, 70 scientific abstracts, and 12 book chapters and holds 4 patents. In 2006 Dr. Haas served as President of the American Oil Chemists’ Society. He has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and received a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Health.

W. Wes Berry

W. Wes BerryChemical engineer consultant with over 20 years of experience in chemical process design and over 10 years of technology development and commercialization experience in the biodiesel industry. Berry is named on 22 patents for various chemical manufacturing applications, has authored numerous publications, and is affiliated with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society, the American Oil Chemists’ Society, Tau Beta Pi, and Phi Kappa Phi. He received an MS in Chemical Engineering from the University of South Florida in 1976.
